The beginning

So heres my first post. Firstly il just say that ive never made a blog before. So hopefuly with time it should improve. But as for now, here goes.

My name is Tom Pearson. I moved up to nottingham on the 28th of september to start my university life. Out drinking every night with some amazing fancy dress has been a great start! But apart from getting drunk, we have been working. A few intro talks about our course has gotten us warmed up, along with a few mini activities.

The first activity we did were the pin hole cameras. Here we made containers out of beer cans with a lid and pinhole, which we could use to make a camera. After having NO success with these kinda things at school, i was a bit hesitant to try it again. However after having a walkabout outside the building, i managed to get some nice pics. After opening the shutter for a few seconds for the photographic paper to be affected, it was off back to the dark room. Here we developed the pieces of paper until we saw a picture. They had told us if it goes black too fast then rush it to the stopper. And typicaly, this happend to be straight away. Developer everywhere. Anywho, the pictures came out very well, two of which are shown:

When you first develop them they are negative, so good old photoshop managed to sort that out. I havent changed the colour levels so i have no idea why the left one looks slightly red. But they both seemed to come out great so im pleased. One effect i did like which someone had done was the shaking of the camera, although probaly by accident, the outcome looked very surreal, like a towering inferno.

The second activity was whiteboard animation. Here we had to draw on a whiteboard and take still photos. These are then put together and made into a short clip, where the pictures move fast enough to give the effect of movment. Ours took 2 hours to create about 12-15 seconds worth of film:

Thats what we got up to in our first week here. The main course starts on tuesday so i cant wait to get started. Ive been asked multiple times what i want to do as a career at the end of it all. to be honest i really dont know, i hope as time goes by i will be more influenced by what ive seen and take a liking to certain areas of my course. If i had to give one area to go into after uni, i would probaly say AV editing. But as this course gives such a wide variety, its a good way to see if i like differnt areas. As for now, i think il shelf that question, and answer it at a later date.
